Obstructive Sleep Apnea

  • Sleep Apnea: It basically means that one stops breathing at times for various time intervals during sleeping. It happens normally in adults mostly obese but the trend is increasing in children. It seems to be linked to obesity and snoring may or may not be the first sig.
  • Snoring: It’s essentially referred to as the noise one makes during sleeping, sometimes while awake during breathing. It may or may not, but mostly points to presence of sleep apnea.
  • Hypopnea: It refers to lesser air being breathed and most snorers and apneics suffer from this. It’s responsible for the most of signs and symptoms in patient as it produces long term air and oxygen hunger in the body.

Types of Sleep Apneas

As the name refers, here the absence of breath is due to presence of an obstruction in the passage of breathing. It is essentially interrupted breathing.

There are two types of breathing interruption characteristic of OSA:

  • Apnea: It can be due to a nasal blockage or because of obesity in soft tissues collapsing over each other or because the muscles of throat, palate, neck etc are so tired that they become limp and collapse over each other, leading to blockage of the passage of air. If it is blocked for more than ten seconds completely, it is recorded as an apneic moment.
  • Hypopnea: whenever a part block of the airway resulting in an airflow reduction of more than 50% for 10seconds or more, it is recorded as a Hypopnea moment.
A set of signs and symptoms get produced as the number of both of the above incidents increase in number and duration.

What Happens During OSA?

  • During the night, people with OSA may experience repeated episodes of apnoa and hypopnea.
  • During an episode, lack of oxygen causes the person to come out of deep sleep and into a lighter state of sleep, or a brief period of wakefulness, in order to restore normal breathing.
  • However, after falling back into deep sleep, further episodes of apnea and hypopnea can occur. Such events may occur more than once a minute throughout the night.
  • Most people with OSA snore loudly. Their breathing may be noisy and laboured and it is often interrupted by gasping and snorting with each episode of apnea.
  • The repeated interruptions to sleep caused by OSA can make the person feel very tired during the day. A person with OSA will usually have no memory of breathlessness, so they are often unaware that they are not getting a proper night’s sleep.
