Joint Pain

Causes Of Joint Pain

Joint pain is a very common condition.

Among joint pains, knee pain is most common followed by shoulder and hip pain. Any joint of your body from ankle to jaw joint, may get involved by joint pain. With age, the incidence of joint pains becomes more common.

Joints basically functions as a bridge for providing connections between bones, along with providing support to the bones and also helps in movements of different body parts.

Any damage to the joints as a result of injury or disease may cause severe pain and also result in limitation of movement.

Conditions leading to painful joints- gout, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, strains, sprains and other injuries.

Intensity of joint pain may vary from mild irritation to debilitating severe condition.

Joint Pain

Joint pain may fade away after a few weeks (in acute cases), or last for several weeks or months (in chronic cases).

TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder)

TMJD can play an important role in causing pain in various joints of your body.

TMJD is an Infratemporal fossa catastrophe, occurring due to inward disc (medial) displacement of the Jaw Joint or TMJ.

This happens due to abnormal teeth grinding, which causes a tilt in the jaw joint leading to abnormal residual forces in the jaw joint.

Close to the temporomandibular joint exists major structures travelling from and to the brain like nerves and blood vessels. This leads to compression of these structures.

The first nerve to be encountered, at a distance of just 0.5 cm or an ants length is the accessory nerve or the number 11 cranial nerve. The job of this nerve is to maintain the head on shoulders at the “COG” or the center of gravity.

Irritation of this nerve alters the muscle function and hence the head position, thereby causing undue pressure on various joints of your body and thus resulting in joint pain.

Medications should always be taken under the guidance of qualified physicians or Orthopedician.

In case of mild joint pain without swelling- Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is effective in providing pain relief.

In case of moderate-to-severe joint pain with swelling-

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as Aspirin or Ibuprofen can provide relief.

Newer generation NSAIDs known as Cox-2 inhibitors (Celebrex) is also good for relieving pain.

In case of severe pain not getting relieved with NSAIDs and Cox-2 medicines- Stronger OPIOID medication may be prescribed by the physician.

Physical Therapy

Few exercises may be performed as guided by physical therapist, to strengthen the muscles around the joint, improving the range of motion and also for stabilization of the joint.

The physical therapist may also use other techniques such as heat or cold therapy, ultrasound, electrical nerve stimulation for joint pain relief.

Losing excess weight from the body may also help in relieving pain by reducing the pressure on the painful joint. Controlled dieting along with exercise may be effective in weight loss but one thing which you need to keep in mind is that the exercises you do must be low impact exercises to avoid further irritation of the joint. Swimming and bicycling are considered as the best exercises for relieving joint pain and strengthening the muscles as these exercises allow you to exercise your joints without putting much pressure on them. Because water is buoyant thus swimming also helps in relieving in some amount of pressure from your joints.

Home Care

Short-term joint pain may be relieved with a few simple home care techniques like-

  • Protection of the joint by using brace or wrap.
  • Giving adequate rest to the joint
  • Avoiding any activities that increase the pain.
  • Ice pack application to the joint for about 15 minutes, several times each day helps in relieving the pain and inflammation.
  • Using an elastic wrap to compress the joint.
  • Keeping your joint elevated above your heart level.
  • Heat application to the joint several times a day for relieving the muscle spasm around the joint.

It becomes utmost important to confirm it with the aid of various sophisticated and most advanced diagnostic technology(AVAILABLE ONLY AT Zental Tmj & Body Pain Division  BODY PAIN TREATMENT CENTRE, only SUPERSPECIALIZED DENTAL clinic in INDIA and PERHAPS IN ASIA TOO), like-

Once the diagnosis is confirmed and connection between TMJD and joints pain has been established, various treatment procedures can be done to eliminate back aches from the roots. It includes-

  • Home care remedies
  • Medicines-pain relievers, muscle relaxants, anti-depressants.
  • Orthotic/splint
  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Veneers, Crown and bridges

Pain and inflammation in the joint may be relieved by injecting potent anti-inflammatory agents like steroids into the joint space.

Ozone Gas injections have also been found quite effective in relieving the joint pain.

Other injection options include:

  • Removing fluid from the joint
  • Injections of hyaluronidase (a synthetic replacement for the natural fluid in the joint)-effective in treating osteoarthritis.

Stem Cell/Platelet Rich Plasma (Prp) Therapy

PRP therapy involves injecting platelets drawn from the patient’s own blood in order to rebuild a damaged cartilage or tendon.

Platelet is separated from the blood by centrifuging it for about 15 minutes.

The damaged or injured tendon or cartilage is then repaired by injecting the platelet rich plasma into the damaged tendon or cartilage.

This therapy is effective in not only relieving the pain, but also helps in accelerating the process of healing.

Joint Pain

Surgical procedures like joint Replacement are considered as the last resort when all other means of providing joint pain relief has failed.
